CFL will be CLOSED to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 17, 2022.

TODAY we opened late due to freezing rain.  Always remember to check in with us when Canton Central is closed due to weather conditions, as our policy is that we will close at least until noon on those days. 

When checking out library books during North Country winters, there is an unwritten guideline similar to that which tells us to keep our gas tanks half-full. You never know!  You could be stranded in a snowbank for hours before help can get to you, so you will need the gas to run the heat in the car every once in a while to keep from freezing – and you will need something to read while you wait!  Also – anyone remember Ice Storm ‘98?  And now that we’ve experienced the pandemic lock-down and the closing of our local libraries for such a long stretch of time, we know better than to wait too long to pick up more books!  

Today it’s been drizzly and freezy and monochromatic outside.  But we have reopened and we have some pretty colorful literary options to keep you warm.  Check them out!

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS:  Virtual Preschool Storytime happens Wednesdays at 10:30am.  Join us!

We also invite you to check out the archive on our website to view one of the many virtual story times posted since April 2020. Scroll down the webpage for older content.

If you are finding yourself short on time, or you aren’t yet comfortable visiting the library with your little ones in person, please remember that curbside service is still very much an option!  Just give us a call or send an email, and we will pack up your books, check them out, and hand them to you from the front door of CFL.  Hope to see you there!

MORLEY BRANCH is open!  Come see us (don’t forget your mask).  Our hours are: Tuesday 1pm-3pm; Wednesday 4pm-6pm; Thursday 10am-12pm.  Masks are required. There is a computer available for your use, but it’s a good idea to call first to check on availability. Scheduled appointments are encouraged, but not required.  Call for more details: 315-379-0066.

RENSSELAER FALLS BRANCH is open on Tuesdays from 11am – 5pm. Masks are required, and those who are under age 12 must be with an adult. 

We want to hear from YOU, Rensselaer Falls community! We will be making surveys available, at the library and on-line, so you can tell us what library services are most important to you, and what additional services you might like us to provide in the future.

CFL will be CLOSED to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on January 17, 2022.

Before then – and after – visit our MLK book display. Check out titles from the display to learn more about some of the most pivotal days of American history, and the man who put his life on the line to enable us all to live into his dream, and ours.

Here is a small sampling of titles, for all ages:

  • Dear Martin by Nic Stone. Writing letters to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., seventeen-year-old college-bound Justyce McAllister struggles to face the reality of race relations today and how they are shaping him.
  • Freedom Summer: The 1964 Struggle for Civil Rights in Mississippi by Susan Goldman Rubin. An account of the civil rights crusade in Mississippi 50 years ago that brought on shocking violence and the beginning of a new political order.
  • What Truth Sounds Like:Robert F. Kennedy, James Baldwin, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America by Michael Eric Dyson. In 1963 Attorney General Robert Kennedy sought out James Baldwin to explain the rage that threatened to engulf black America. Baldwin brought along some friends, including playwright Lorraine Hansberry, psychologist Kenneth Clark, and a valiant activist, Jerome Smith. It was Smith’s relentless, unfiltered fury that set Kennedy on his heels, reducing him to sullen silence. Kennedy walked away from the nearly three-hour meeting angry – that the black folk assembled didn’t understand politics, and that they weren’t as easy to talk to as Martin Luther King. But especially that they were more interested in witness than policy. But Kennedy’s anger quickly gave way to empathy, especially for Smith……..
  • The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr. edited by Clayborne Carson.
  • Confessions in B-Flat by Donna Hill. Follows the 1964 Civil Rights-era relationship between a passive-resistance protégé of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a Harlem black culture supporter of Malcolm X.
  • Loretta Little Looks Back: Three Voices Go Tell It!: A Monologue Novel by Andrea Davis Pinkney ; paintings by Brian Pinkney. Loretta, Roly, and Aggie B. Little relate their Mississippi family’s struggles and triumphs from 1927 to 1968 while struggling as sharecroppers, living under Jim Crow, and fighting for Civil Rights.

If we’re going to have a pandemic, there’s no one we’d rather tough it out with than YOU!  Thinking back over the ups and downs of 2021, some of our greatest encouragement has come from our patrons.  

Thank you for your patience as we learned to navigate COVID-19 together.  (And CONTINUE to learn!) Thank you for the smiles behind the masks, and your patience,  as you met us at the door for your curbside pick-ups, before we could re-open the building for your use.  

We wish you all a very happy New Year, with feasting and fun, friends and family – in person or otherwise. 🙂
