After I took this photo of Louise Penny’s novel, How the Light Gets In, I realized that, the last time I put the column together, the photo I used was of Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency: The Joy and Light Bus Company.
Light. We miss it! But it’s return is just around the corner with the winter solstice on Tuesday, December 21! In the meantime, visit CFL for a little light reading!
The Louise Penny novel in the photo was actually NOT chosen for the title (that turned out to be serendipitous), but because, after years and years of hearing people (whose literary tastes I admire) recommend that I read her, I have BEGUN my journey! Penny is popular for very solid reasons, and her stories – though they have to do with death – are full of wisdom and light and humor. (They remind me a bit of the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peters.) I look forward to a deepening relationship with the fictional village of Three Pines and her inhabitants.
About the Series:
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec digs beneath the idyllic surface of village life in Three Pines, finding long buried secrets—and facing a few of his own ghosts. Louise Penny’s highly acclaimed, New York Times bestselling mystery series has won the New Blood Dagger as well as multiple Agatha, Anthony, Dilys, Arthur Ellis, and other prestigious awards. In 2010 the first book, Still Life, was cited as one of the five Mystery/Crime Novels of the Decade by Deadly Pleasures magazine.
