@ Your Library 8.5.22

by Beverly Ewart

Fireworks have nothing on the spectacular blooms of a North Country flower garden in summer!  I have enjoyed watching crocuses and violets give way to lilies of the valley and daffodils, which faded to make room for the iris, peonies, and lupines.  Right now our gardens are a riot of flox, hydrangeas, daisies, brown-eyed Susans, hostas, and coneflowers!

Are you also fascinated by flowers?  Do you enjoy blooms for their colors and variety, or do you plant specifically to attract pollinators or hummingbirds?  We have plenty of resources for you at CFL – come on in and check them out! (While you’re here – take a peek at the landscaping around the building that the Obrosky family and other friends have done and maintained for us – it’s beautiful, and the blooms are spectacular!)

With 3800 specially commissioned paintings, maps and photographs, this beautifully illustrated guide to the wild flowers and flora of the world is a must-have volume for every naturalist. ~ Publisher

Upgrade to Libby.

In early 2023, the OverDrive app will be discontinued. We encourage you to make the switch to Libby, our newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, with the same goal of connecting you to your library and to your favorite books, audiobooks, and magazines.

Download Libby or visit libbyapp.com to get started.

Why is this happening now?

North Country Library System launched the Libby app in 2017, with the goal of creating a simple and intuitive library app that builds on the core experience from the OverDrive app. They closely reviewed what was working with the OverDrive app and what could be improved. During this time, they didn’t want to interrupt the experience for users, so the two apps have both been available.

Thanks to feedback from librarians and readers like you, Libby is now a great app for everyone and there’s no longer a reason to have two apps that do the same thing. If you’ve enjoyed using the OverDrive app, we really hope you’ll love Libby.

Anime Club happens on Thursdays, 5pm-7pm.  Contact Zach for more information at zwoodleywhite@ncls.org.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS: Our 2022 children’s Summer Library Program has come to a close in terms of programs and Storywalks, but keep recording time spent reading until September 1st on your reading records (available in the children’s room) and then return them to the Children’s Room for a prize!   Thanks to all who attended our first Storytimes in over 2 years! It was SO GOOD to have you back! Look for details in the next few weeks about our fall children’s programming, which will start up after school begins.

Thanks to all who used the QR code and did the quick 3-question survey after doing the Storywalks at the Partridge Trail. It’s so interesting and helpful to see how many people view the installations!

Check out the archive to view one of the many virtual storytimes posted since April 2020. Scroll down the webpage for older content.

Bloom @ your library!

@ Your Library 7.29.22

@ Your Library 7.29.22

By Beverly Ewart

Some of my earliest literary memories include a hardworking hedgehog named Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.  Some of yours may include a hedgehog named, provocatively, Hedgie, who loves to read and excels at foiling egg-thefts.

Or maybe you remember an adventurous Redwall Hedgehog by the name of Durry Quill?

These characters have won affection for hedgehogs in general (who doesn’t love hedgehogs?!?), but the hedgehog who, perhaps, has done the most to catapult his kin into fame must be Sonic!

Sonic made his debut video-game appearance in 1991 with Sega, and has been on a roll ever since.  He’s one of the best-known video game characters in the world, whose fame has launched several live-action movies, graphic novels, and other games and print media.

Roll on in to Canton Free Library and check out Sonic!  Or introduce a young friend to legendary hedgehogs like Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Hedgie, or Durry Quill.

  • The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter. Lucie visits the laundry of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, a hedgehog, and finds her lost handkerchiefs.
  • Hedgie’s Surprise by Jan Brett. Hedgie, the hedgehog, helps Henny, the speckled hen, trick the Tomten who has been eating all of Henny’s eggs for breakfast.
  • Mariel of Redwall by Brian Jacques ; illustrated by Gary Chalk. When the mouse-ship carrying Joseph the Bellmaker and his daughter Mariel runs afoul of a pirate rat king, they are mercilessly tossed overboard. Washed ashore and certain that her father is dead, Mariel vows revenge.
  • Sonic [DVD]:The Hedgehog by Paramount Home Entertainment. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound, human, best friend Tom Wachowski. Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Volume 1: Fallout! Story by Ian Flynn.  The evil genius Dr. Eggman has been foiled–but the work of Sonic the Hedgehog isn’t over yet. In the aftermath of the latest epic battle, rogue robots continue to attack small villages around the world.  In order to defeat them, Sonic will need the help of his friends Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, along with some new and surprising allies. ~ Publisher
