Alexander McCall Smith has given us another installment of his delightful No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series: The Joy and Light Bus Company. The title is as winsome as his remarkable, memorable characters.  Enjoy their joy and light in this season of shorter days and longer nights.

  • The Joy and Light Bus Company by Alexander McCall Smith.  The newest addition to the ever-popular, internationally beloved series finds Precious Ramotswe and her friends up to their necks in mysterious trouble. Mma Ramotswe knows she is very lucky indeed. She has a loving family, good friends, and a thriving business doing what she enjoys most: helping people. But the latest mystery she is called upon to solve is distinctly trickier than it initially appears, and, of course, there’s plenty to handle in her personal life between Charlie and his new bride and Mma Makutsi and her talking shoes. In the end, Mma Ramotswe’s patience and common sense will win out, and, without a doubt, all will be the better for it.  – Provided by publisher.

Rubble-Rousing at CFLphoto by Jennifer Henry

We are rubble-rousing at CFL!

Work on our ramp has officially begun.  Please excuse the mess – it will be worth it!

In the meantime, please use the front doors.  We have an elevator for access, because it’s hard to climb up the side of the building unless you have rappelling gear.  We did lock and secure the side door to the ramp for safety reasons, so rappelling gear wouldn’t be much use right now, anyway. (Plus our alarms might go off, which would just be embarrassing.)

Congratulations to Kristina Cundiff, our Novel Noir First Place winner with her photograph SHHH, Jerry Bartlett with his Second Place photo titled The Piano, and Jenn Whittaker with her Third Place photo titled Bleak Sneakers. Honorable Mention goes to Mae Compoli for her photo titled Trouble. Check out all the Novel Noir entries in our gallery! https://cantonfreelibrary.org/novel-noir-winners-announced/

CFL will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, November 11, 2021 to honor our veterans.

Walk in the front door @ your library!

Today we had our first snowfall in Canton!  Somebody came quietly into the library and caught our whole staff team staring out the big front window, mesmerized by huge, downy flakes dropping from grey clouds overhead. You’d think we’d never seen snow before!

The first snowfall always reminds me of my first encounter with C.S. Lewis’s book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  As a kid I was entranced by the idea of a world you could enter through the back of something as commonplace as a wardrobe!  When I first entered Narnia through the back of that fictional wardrobe, it was winter.

Last weekend I picked up Patti Callahan’s Once Upon a Wardrobe because of my warm attachment to the land of Narnia and all things C.S. Lewis.  It must be pretty intense and challenging to write a book true to the spirit of fictional characters, and real ones, who are so universally known and beloved!  There was no commitment on my part to finish the book.  If it didn’t do justice to Lewis and his creative genius, I’d be out in a flash.  No sense wasting precious reading time!

Patti Callahan charmed me with her layers of fiction and fact; story in story in truly marvelous prose.  She drew me in, as Lewis drew me into Narnia so many years ago.

If you are a fellow lover of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in particular, and a lover of story and myth and the creative process in general, check out Once Upon a Wardrobe.  Follow the words to a marvelous adventure!

  • Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan.  From the bestselling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis comes another beautiful story inspired by C. S. Lewis’s ability to change the world and captivate hearts – including those of a terminally ill boy and his logic-driven sister. – Provided by publisher.
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis.  Four English school children find their way through the back of a wardrobe into the magic land of Narnia and assist Aslan, the golden lion, to triumph over the White Witch, who has cursed the land with eternal winter. – Publisher
