Canton Free Library hosts Novel Noir: A Photo Contest – by Jen Henry
CANTON, NY. – Fall is the perfect time to embrace the play of shadows and light and the Canton Free Library in partnership with The Brewer Bookstore challenges local amateur photographers to the first ever Novel Noir Photo Contest.
The contest is open to amateur photographers only, ages 16 and up. A professional is defined as one whose primary source of income (50%) or more results from his/her photographic work.
The noir genre is devoted to fictional crime stories that are dark and cynical. When used in film, the term refers to the stark contrasts of light and shadow in black and white cinematography that is often associated with popular detective films of the 1940’s (i.e. The Big Sleep). The genre is still popular, and newer examples are coined neo-noir, to include color films of the same vibe made in the 1970’s onward (i.e. Blade Runner).
The Canton Free Library is asking you to envision your favorite novels and depict them stylistically through noir style photography. While using novels that are already noir themed (mystery, detective, crime) may make the task easier, it is also completely acceptable to use novels in other genres to influence your Novel Noir masterpiece.
Try your hand at taking photos by streetlight, dig out that old typewriter or the fedora from the back of the closet, and hunt down some vintage threads to cast a friend in a noir themed role from a well-loved story. If you’d rather capture the art of the novel through the beauty of the books themselves, dig out those leather bound volumes and let the lens play its magic.
How to Enter: Please submit up to 3 photographs that are Novel Noir themed. Photographs may be emailed to email@example.com through October 23, 2021. Please include the following in your email: your name, phone number, title of photo and novel you were influenced by. All photos must be in JPG format.
Photographs selected for the contest will be rated online from October 25-29, 2021. Selected photos will be displayed online at the Canton Free Library’s website, https://cantonfreelibrary.org from November 1, 2021-December 3, 2021. Contest winners will be announced on the Library’s website.
Prizes are sponsored by Brewer Bookstore and will be awarded as follows: 1st prize: $50 gift certificate, 2nd prize: $30 gift certificate, 3rd prize: $20 gift certificate.
