We have A.C..  We have “Oceans of Possibility!”, our fun summer library program for young people.  We have newspapers and magazines to read in the A.C.; free wifi, and computers to use when you want to stay out of the heat of the day.  We have space available for the needs of your group or event.  Even the staff are cool here, and they will be glad to help you with research, questions, printing, faxing, or suggesting a good book or resource upon your request.

We also have cool FRIENDS, and they would love to have you join them!  Should you be interested in becoming a member of the Friends of the Canton Free Library, stop by and pick up a membership form.  The Friends mission is to promote and support the library’s function, resources and services.  They truly come alongside us by being an encouraging network of people who are willing to volunteer their time to make CFL a welcoming place to be.

Cool Friends, cool staff, cool air….  Cool library.  Check us out!

CFL is offering  a riveting USA Today bestselling novel for a worldwide digital book club

“The Girl in His Shadow” ebook and audiobook is now available for reading and discussion with a global audience

July 13, 2022 – Dive into a suspenseful USA Today bestselling novel during Big Library Read, the world’s largest digital book club. From July 13-27, readers will join over a hundred thousand others around the globe in enjoying Audrey Blake’s historical fiction The Girl in His Shadow from their public library. Canton Free Library library card holders can borrow the ebook and audiobook for free without waiting on the Libby app . Readers can then discuss online at https://biglibraryread.com/join-the-discussion/.

This Big Library Read novel is available in more than 21,000 libraries around the world including  Canton Free Library and approximately 90 percent of public libraries in North America. The program is facilitated by OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform for popular ebooks, audiobooks and magazines and creator of the Libby app.

The Girl in His Shadow takes place in London in 1845. Raised by surgeon Dr. Horace Croft after losing her parents, Nora Beady knows little about conventional life and much about suturing and anatomical illustrations of dissections. Women face dire consequences if caught practicing medicine, but in Croft’s private clinic Nora is his most trusted—and secret—assistant… until the new surgical resident Dr. Daniel Gibson arrives. To protect Dr. Croft and his practice Nora must learn to play a new and uncomfortable role—that of a proper young lady. When she makes a discovery that could change the field forever, Nora faces an impossible choice. Remain invisible and let the men around her take credit for her work, or step into the light—even if it means being destroyed by her own legacy.

Big Library Read is an international reading program that connects millions of readers around the world with an ebook through public libraries. The Girl in His Shadow is the 28th selection of this program which began in 2013 and takes place three times per year. Readers can join an online discussion about the book at https://biglibraryread.com/join-the-discussion/.

The Girl in His Shadow was published as an ebook by Sourcebooks and as an audiobook by Recorded Books. The title can be read on all major computers and devices through Libby or libbyapp.com, including iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets and Chromebook™ without waitlists or holds. Through Libby, readers can also “send to Kindle®” [U.S. libraries only]. The title will automatically expire at the end of the lending period, and there are no late fees.

Upgrade to Libby.

In early 2023, the OverDrive app will be discontinued. We encourage you to make the switch to Libby, our newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, with the same goal of connecting you to your library and to your favorite books, audiobooks, and magazines.

Download Libby or visit libbyapp.com to get started.

Why is this happening now?

North Country Library System launched the Libby app in 2017, with the goal of creating a simple and intuitive library app that builds on the core experience from the OverDrive app. They closely reviewed what was working with the OverDrive app and what could be improved. During this time, they didn’t want to interrupt the experience for users, so the two apps have both been available.

Thanks to feedback from librarians and readers like you, Libby is now a great app for everyone and there’s no longer a reason to have two apps that do the same thing. If you’ve enjoyed using the OverDrive app, we really hope you’ll love Libby.

Anime Club happens on Thursdays, 5pm-7pm.  Contact Zach for more information at zwoodleywhite@ncls.org.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS:  Storywalks® will change this Friday at the trail at the Partridge Run Golf Course. The next book will be This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen, and every Friday in July, the story will change.  Take a walk and read a story! Please be sure to scan the QR code at the end and answer the quick survey question so we can track how many people are enjoying the Storywalks®!

We are enjoying the return of in-person children’s programming with the 2022 Summer Library Program: Oceans of Possibility!  Registration deadline was June 10th for the age-specific programs, but there are events that don’t require registration! https://cantonfreelibrary.org/summer-reading-program/
